Think about how many objects a person touches every day: chairs, tables, door handles, writing utensils, computers, bags, handrails, food etc. Now match that statistic with the idea that the average person touches their face 2000 times a day. The best way to prevent diseases from transferring from surfaces to our bodies is hand washing. As the simplest form of disease prevention, the CDC suggests, “it has the potential to save more lives than any vaccine.” Today, it is estimated that 85% of adults wash their hands after using a public restroom, which is up from rates of previous years. However, that is not enough. At The Walker School in Marietta, Georgia, it was found that almost 50% of upper school boys do not wash their hands after using the bathroom. Maybe it is time to redesign the public health campaigns in both high school and public restrooms. The basic posters have become white noise, and the population feels like skipping this step is acceptable. Colored paper towels, music in the bathroom, a different layout, maybe just new posters will help direct students and adults attention to help increase hand washing rates.

I really like your ideas to encourage hand washing. If the restroom had a change in it, maybe the routine could be changed too. Maybe teachers could require their students to use hand sanitizer upon entering the classroom too?
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that the basic hand-washing posters in the bathrooms have sort of faded into the background for most people. Perhaps more colorful or eye-catching posters would better serve the purpose. However, I also think that, although changing the layout of the bathrooms or making the paper towels more colorful may work well for a while, even these measures would most likely become white noise to a lot of people after a while. I think that something like Miranda's suggestion, where teachers actively encourage better hygiene habits and help educate students about how important hand-washing is may work better.
ReplyDeleteI like both Michelle and Marguerite's suggestions, but am I the only one who thought that Walker statistic was completely disgusting? I mean, we sit next to boys, we sit at the same desks as they do, they lend us pencils...and they don't wash their hands. I don't even want to know what the rate is with teachers, either. I think changing the posters is totally necessary, too, because they've said 'it's flu season' for like three years straight. The idea of mandatory hand sanitizer is a great one, I think, especially because it wouldn't take much time out of a class to pass the sanitizer around.
