#STDs

Did you know that while young people represent only 25% of the sexually active population, 50% of STD cases occur in people ages 15 to 24?  The CDC and public health officials believe that in order to decrease this statistic, teenagers need more education on safer sex.  While the traditional sex-ed classes in middle and high school do some good, the CDC is looking into other ways to educate young people.  Today, social media has become the fastest way to spread information through Facebook, blogs, or even Twitter.  With these popular forms of social media being mostly used by the CDC’s target population, Twitter and Facebook could become a major source of advertising for public health purposes.  With this in mind, the CDC has decided to host a Twitter chat this Monday at 1:00pm to talk about STD testing and safety.   I personally think this is a fantastic way to spread information, as teenagers are more likely to read a series of tweets rather than an article on protecting themselves from STDs.   Through retweets and trending topics, Tweeting is a low key way for teenagers to get the needed information and tell their friends about it.  #checkitout

  1. I wonder if it would be smarter of the CDC to host the Twitter chat not during school hours... If their target audience is teenagers, it would seem that they would try to contact them at a more appropriate time. That being said, I really like the idea of using Facebook and Twitter as a way to reach out to the younger generation.

  2. I love this idea of using Facebook and Twitter to educate teenagers on safe sex. Because Facebook and Twitter have become so popular in the last few years, I think this is the most beneficial way to reach out to children and really engage them in learning the importance of STD testing and safety. Although, I think this is an absolutely great idea, I also agree with Miranda's comment. I think the CDC should definitely chose several times to host a Twitter chat that are convenient for young adults today.

  3. Miranda's point is spot on as often as I use my phone during school hours I'm not sure even I would be driven enough to watch tweets at 1PM just to inform myself about STDs. However, I'm glad the CDC is atleast trying new ideas and adapting to the changing world around us. I'd love to see more of this but I'm afraid twitter and facebook could become to commercially used and in turn lose popularity and no longer be a viable social medium. Just a final thought I would be slightly uncomfortable to post a question concerning STDs on twitter or Facebook maybe I'm just not saavy enough but could the CDC also do something to make people anonymous?

A CT scan revealed three tumors; one in the center of my liver in damaged tissue and two in healthy portions of my liver. No chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment was prescribed due to my age, the number of liver tumors. One month following my diagnosis I began taking 12 (350 point) Salvestrol supplements per day, commensurate with my body weight. This comprised six Salvestrol Shield (350 point) capsules and six Salvestrol Gold (350 point) capsules, spread through the day by taking two of each capsule after each main meal. This level of Salvestrol supplementation (4,000 points per day) was maintained for four months. In addition, I began a program of breathing exercises, chi exercises, meditation, stretching and stress avoidance.
